Gravel & Base Work

Aggregate Base Preparation

The foundation of any lasting pavement — proper base work is what separates a 5-year driveway from a 25-year driveway.

Overview

In Minnesota, the gravel base is the most critical component of any paved surface. Frost penetrates 42–60 inches in our region, and inadequate base is the #1 cause of early pavement failure. We use Class 5 aggregate and proper compaction techniques to build bases that resist frost heave and provide stable support.

Our Process

  1. 1Excavate to proper depth (12–18" typical)
  2. 2Install geotextile fabric if needed
  3. 3Deliver and spread Class 5 aggregate
  4. 4Compact in 4" lifts with vibratory roller
  5. 5Check grade and drainage slope
  6. 6Proof-roll for soft spots before paving
